Course Details

Jo will guide you through every step involved in making a finished ceramic piece – from preparing clay to applying glazes. This weekly course will cover some fundamental theory and focus on practicing different techniques for hand-building. There will be an opportunity to have a go at throwing on the wheel, but please note this is not a throwing course. You will get the chance to explore making a variety of shapes using slab, pinch and coil techniques and opportunities to use forms and moulds. Jo will teach you the techniques and help guide your creativity to make your own designs. Week 1: Theory, Clay preparation & Pinch Pots Week 2: Coil techniques Week 3: Slab Building Week 4: Decoration & Glazing Week 5: Practice Week 6: Practice + glazing The course takes place at our Art Shop & Studio in the historical heart of Sleaford, Lincolnshire and is suitable for adults who are starting out on their clay journey. Group numbers are capped at 8 people to ensure that every student receives enough one-to-one tuition and to allow a comfortable working environment. Working with clay is a messy business, please bring an apron and an old hand towel. Please also be aware that long nails can get in the way of your creative expression, so it is best to trim them. Please bear in mind that it could take up to 3 weeks after the end of the course for pots to go through the final glaze kiln before they can be collected.
